Discovering the Taj Mahal in 2024: Your Ultimate Guide
The Taj Mahal is one of the newest wonders of the world, so take a look at my sampling of my travels and all the relevant information and tips on visiting the Taj Mahal in India.
Well In August 2008 I was able to visit one of the most beautiful place in the world that is Taj Mahal in India.
As far as I can recall memories, the Taj Mahal has been among the places that I would so much like to visit one day. It has been on my wish list for quite some time and when I decided with Bradley to visit India it was one of the places I was very happy to be visiting.
You know how sometimes you’ve seen a place so much in the pictures, and on television that you expect to be let down when you actually get there? Well, the Taj Mahal is dissimilar to that.
It is even more breathtaking and beautiful in person and I do recommend that anybody else who is planning a trip to India make it one of their must see areas.
So, as a way to get you to come and see this magnificent building, I decided to enlighten you with some information on how to get to The Taj Mahal, it’s prices and when is the best time to visit. Well yes you can have a photo with no one else in it beside you!
Fun facts about the Taj Mahal
• It is a historic ivory-white marble mausoleum.
• Further suggestion was made that the other Taj would be constructed on the other side of this one or that it would be constructed out of black marble (that would have been interesting).
• It was built for the royal lady Mumtaz Mahal for Shah Jahan and the builder himself is still on the tomb there.
• Some people claim that it is structurally unsound and is likely to collapse hence should be visited soon.
• It is of the latest seven wonders of the worldwide marble mausoleum.
• It was suggested that another Taj would be built opposite this one but with black marble (that would have been cool)
• It was created by Shah Jahan for his 3rd wife (his tomb still lies inside)
• Replicas of the Taj are in Dubai and Bangladesh
• They say the Taj won’t be around forever due to structural concerns (so best to visit soon)
• It’s one of the new Seven Wonders of the World
Do you know where is it situated?
Taj Mahal is situated in Agra, India. It is located in the so called Golden triangle which encompasses Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. All the forts and monuments are located inside Agra and it is just some few hours’ drive from Delhi meaning people usually journey down from Delhi to see the attractions before returning to their homes at night.
Yes wait, yes we hit up tourist Agra is a tourist trap, I mean, I won’t classify it as expensive to western standards but I do believe, I do think you should stay at night in Agra because there are just so many amazingly fab hotels like the one we have here in Agra near the Taj Mahal!
What is the price to get into the Taj Mahal?
The price charged for the tickets differ between Indians and foreign visitors.
- Foreigners: 1100 to 1300 (Rupees 200 extra, especially for getting into the Taj mahal) around £ 14/Around $17
- Locals: 250 around £3
- You can purchase tickets way ahead, for example at the East Gate Entrance and the West Gate up to one hour before sunrise and 45 minutes to the sunset.
- In my opinion, you should definitely purchase your tickets on the Internet. Why? Well, it’s far easier and you get a discount, and it saves time because you don’t have to stand in a ticket line only to stand in another line at the door… brilliant!
- If you buy your tickets online you get a discount of 50 rupees!
- It’s as easy as asking your hotel staff to print them for you and they just need to scan the barcode.
It is crucial to know when is the best time to visit Taj?
You should arrive at least one hour before sunrise, which, by the way, the queue is most likely to be formed by then. But, once those doors open, move to that famous bench which is right in front of the Taj [as you will understand when you see one], snap a photo.
In roughly between 10-15 mins the place gets very crowded, and if you’re planning to take your shot you will have to delete all the fellow people from your picture in Photoshop.
Also, the visiting hours for the Taj Mahal is restricted due to the harnessing of the maximum traffic for the period from October to March.
What should I know about the Taj Mahal?
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays- so don’t go then.
I would avoid a Saturday too, if you can. We visited on Saturdays as it was very packed during the morning. The time I arrived was two hours before the doors opened to the public and the place was full of people waiting for the place to open.
How many hours does it take to see?
We entered the place it took Brad and me about an hour to walk around the beautiful garden and get inside the Taj, and the other buildings beside it. We had to be up and on our feet early enough to make it for the breakfast buffet in the hotel.
If you are taking the guide (which I strongly suggest you do) then it might even take longer. Of course, it is useful to listen to all kinds of exciting and extraordinary things about Taj.
I feel like I could have gotten a guide, but I did do some reading before and after so its all good.
You can book for a tour in advance by getting a guide or you can get one within the place.
Some other things about Taj Mahal
In the interests of telling you everything I know then here are some other great travel tips:
- Do not carry playing cards into the Taj…they are stripping off you. I can’t even recall why we had playing cards but we had it lol
- You pass through security so anticipate to be searched for bags, touch search and etc
- You cannot photograph the interior of the main building of the Taj Mahal (indeed you don’t want to).
- And amazing is actually a little bit let down if you expect a lot of inside the Taj Mahal.
- We also need to keep up the lure, nothing to it and if that means wearing s bright colour that contrasts the white of the marble like blue green or red then that has to be done.
- You can take a cup of masala tea when you are still waiting for your turn
- Men and women stand in line by their own thus; if you are two in a relationship you will be each on a separate line.
- Please don’t purchase souvenirs as everything doubles in price because you are so close to the Taj Mahal.
